Executive Insights

Construction Executive asked a certified public accountant, a chief financial officer and several of the industry's top tech experts to comment on the emerging technologies that impact contractors and construction accountants. Whether your company is multinational firm with projects dotting the globe, a medium-size firm working in several states or counties or a small firm just starting out, these executive insights can help make your contracting business more profitable.

The greatest impact on contractors will not be a single technology, or even a series of innovations, but collaboration among construction technology companies to better serve this industry. Many contractors are using a combination of smart technology products that work together to increase efficiency and productivity. For example, remote field entry applications are widely popular for their time-saving and accuracy benefits—especially when they can integrate with accounting software and eliminate data re-entry.

Twenty years ago, many predicted integrated ERP software would soon replace "best of breed" construction-specific software in accounting, estimating, project management, scheduling and other functions. In reality, no one has yet to figure out a way to excel in every single area. Many companies go outside their expertise to add feature upon feature to their software in an attempt to cover all their bases. The result is usually a high-priced product that has limited depth in areas contractors need and more features than they could ever use.

Integration and collaboration between technology providers is not yet where it needs to be. However, as a result of so many acquisitions within the construction industry in recent years, I believe we will see older and less-worthy software systems fall away, with only the best-of-breed remaining. Contractors will benefit from end-to-end business solutions, not from one source, but from well-run innovative companies that were smart enough to work together to provide seamless integration to their construction clients through old-fashioned business partnering.
